The role architecture plays in building green homes cannot be undermined. It is referred to as Green Architecture in which construction of buildings take place keeping in mind the environment and the ecological well being.

Architects are basically required to consider few aspects while building green buildings. The materials that are being used should be environment friendly. In this regard, the skills, expertise and experience of a green architect can be of immense help.

The green architect should monitor matters related to the following while constructing a green building –

• Initial consultation
• Dealing with site designs
• Modification of plan

In fact construction as well as designing should be done keeping in mind the green factor.

How can an architect change energy inefficient homes into energy efficient homes?
Green architects have the expertise to convert energy inefficient homes into energy efficient homes. The construction or renovation of the building can be done in such a way so that the following changes can be brought about –

• By changing appliances
• Adding insulation
• Improving cooling systems
• Improving heating systems etc

How will green architecture affect mortgages?
Majority of the houses are energy inefficient. They have not been built keeping in mind the green factor. However, if you are residing in a green house and you want to take out a mortgage, the amount you have to pay each month will be higher. BUT this is usually set off by the lower utility bills since your green house is now more energy efficient than before. So, you end up paying less each month.

Statistics furnished by the US government’s Federal Citizen Information Center states that a house that was valued at USD$150,000 prior to changing the architecture to “green” increased in value and was worth USD$ 154, 816 after the green architects brought about the necessary energy efficient changes.
