Tim Pawlenty’s budget team is compiling numbers on a major new construction bill aimed at spurring much needed activity on public work projects. The Bonding Bill, as it is called, will allow a set list of public work projects to be approved by borrowed state funding.
Tom Hanson, the budget commissioner goes before legislators today to discuss financial guidelines, how to speed up the process of projects from start to finish, and how to create more jobs .
“A $1 billion bonding bill would create, at the rate of $100,000 per job, would create 10,000 jobs,” said Governor Pawlenty , “But that out of a base of 2.6 million jobs in Minnesota.” He also stated, “We need to make sure that we do all that we can to make Minnesota a more competitive place, and a more likely place to start businesses, grow businesses, and provide jobs paychecks for hardworking Minnesotans.”
Senator Larry Pogemiller had this to add “It is only a canary in the mine shaft to the long-term challenge the state has. We absolutely need to bring the cost-structure of state activities down.” The Senator is known to speak out on job creation and construction issues.

A. We had this question come up a couple of weeks ago. Someone was wondering if their new home fit into any rating systems. Since their home was new-to-them and not recently constructed, the certification guidelines do not apply. If you are looking for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) program certifications, then you must include the builder during your residential or commercial build. A preexisting structure would need to be “re-greened” by following the guidelines instituted by the U.S. Green Building Council and the American Society of Interior Designers Foundation.
The guidelines are very thorough. Chances are that you will find your questions are all addressed in their program guidelines on regreenprogram.org. Just recently added, a strategy generator. Looking for ways to save money on heating? The strategy generator will show you different projects to do just that.
Whether or not your home qualifies for any tax breaks or incentives breaks down to whether or not you follow energy guidelines. Check them out before you new build so that you will know what is available. Feel free to contact RemWhirl with any specific questions.

Say you have been thinking about a build. The project isn’t pressing. You think that an added room or feature could spruce up your home. At this point you may be curious as to what kind of architects are around, what kind of work they do, and prices too. Searching through the web can be daunting. If your searching for a smaller niche like architecture, then this should help you find a good selection of architects in your area and their websites.
We will start our search looking for an architect in Brainerd Minnesota. Why Brainerd? Because that’s where we are stationed, actually Crosslake, but Brainerd is just a few minutes away. Follow along!! The first step is to find your market.
1. Search in Google ‘city name + architect’.
Chances are you will get more actual architects in the business listings with this format.
2. Next to the search bar click “Advanced Options”
Use the region, date, and blog search filters to find out as much as possible. When we searched for ‘Brainerd Architect’ and filtered it by posts created in the last week, the results were mixed, but a couple interesting pages show up. You can filter by blog too. Using a blog search you can check to see which architects have a blog.
3. Use Real-Time Searches for New Results and Comments.
This is a new one. You can use Twitter, One Riot, and Scoopler to see what people are saying about architecture, architectural firms, landscaping, or whatever else you desire. For now, architecture is not largely discussed on these sites. In the future that will change.
Sometimes Google reviews and Yahoo Answers don’t provide you with the knowledge you need. If you are looking for comments or reviews for architects in your area, don’t be afraid to call the architect themselves. Ask for references or testimonials and be on your way to your brand new build, providing years of happiness for you and your loved ones.

Considering an Architect?
If you have been pondering whether or not your build should involve an architect you have came to the right place. Picking an architect is an important decision and an important one at that.
Your project should last for a lifetime and can be a center for many generations of memories. In the Brainerd Lakes Area your design can accent the natural beauty of the northwoods or the luxuries of living on a lake. You may be looking to entertain or have a multi-functional building. Here are a few suggestions for you when selecting an architect.
If your in or around Brainerd Minnesota you can find the local architects by looking through the phone book or check with a major search engine for architects in Brainerd, Crosslake, Nisswa or Baxter. When you find a few you are interested in, look up their websites and check out some of their previous work, view testimonials, and even set up an appointment through their website. You can also just telephone the architect’s for an interview.
After contacting the Architectural Firms in your area narrow the list down to two or three. Set up a face-to-face meeting with the architectural firm that you have selected. Come to the meeting prepared, know what you want to ask, and the points you would like to reveal.
Suggestions for Questions:
- What type of work do you perform?
- Can I see examples of your work?
- Do you have references I can speak with or testimonials for viewing?
- What do your services entail?
- What, if any, are your design principles? This is where you need to think of your vision for the project. Will the architect adhere to your wants and needs? The project after all is designed for you, the client, and you should be happy and confident (at all times) that you are being listened to.
- Do you have rendering capabilities? This may not be the most important question when dealing with a well-respected firm. After all, the work can speak for itself.
- Pricing – What is your fee structure? Some architects charge by hour and others charge a percentage of the total construction cost. It is important to find out which method your architect will use for your project. Ask about hidden costs and any additional charges you may end up being stuck with.
- Are you insured

As the government continues to offer incentives for “going green” or perharps you want to help the environment. Whatever the reason you choose there are many sustainable features that will lower costs and help the environment. We also focus on the materials we use and also how we deal with waste on the jobsite. Excess building material means more cost. Many builders will push the cost off on you. Overestimating materials can also leave an effect on the environment, disposal and processing, or even storage will require attentional and resources. Today builders need verify estimations not only to reduce costs and do their part for the planet.

A. There are many different factors to consider when adding on to your home. Finding out wheter it would be better to build another level on your house or expanding outward is a big decision. The weight of such a decision will last for a lifetime so your decision should be the right one. You may not have to choose, the choice may already be made for you. Planning and zoning restrictions for certain areas may restrict any additions. Expanding up isn’t always the cheaper of the two. Sometimes additional foundation work is required before the added weight will be inhabitable. Feel free to contact us and let us know a few details about your build. We will be happy to help you in determining what kind of remodel is the right choice for you.
